Note to get off my arse.

I need to go and see the man about turning the spindles. He can be getting on with these as I'm working on the windows. It's always a stumbling block for me, when I have to use others help.

Now there's a thought the spindle turning will cost me about £150. If I could get hold of a second hand wood lathe...hmm

  1. Andy,

Enjoyed reading through your blog. I am on with a very similar loft project with a lot of similarities.

I chuckled at your 300 screws, I have put 700 in to a similar amount of flooring !! Also put a DPC between the floor joist and chipboard to try and eliminate any creaks - I'll be gutted when it does !

Had roof reroofed and dormer built by pros, father in law is a builder so did most of it and put the steel and floor joists in. Im now plodding along with the internals.

I now have staircase in, cost £1400 , no spindles fitted (damage limitation), floor down and just had delivery of shed loads of Celotex for insulating the roof rafters - not looking forward to cutting it to fit.

I am in South Manchester - are you anywhere close by - would love to get hold of your £60 a day plasterer.

  2. Hi Stuart,
I don't think you'll need to worry about creaking with that many screws. I thought I was going a bit over the top!
Just keep plodding on with the Celotex. I found cutting it with a long blade in the jigsaw was the easiest. It can be quite satifying as the room starts to take shape. Any little mistakes in the cutting and a squirt of expanding foam will sort out.
I'm in Chesterfield, the plasterer only lives a mile or so away, that might have helped with the price. You'r father in law will probably know someone that will do it for you as a weekend job, no harm in asking.
Good luck with the rest of it, you might get it finished before me.
    Cheers
    Andy

  3. Andy,

Very unlikely I will finish before you - I barely ever finish a job, just end up starting another !!

Have you had to do anything about firedoors ?

The B Regs used to insist on fitting autoclosers, but that changed to now retro fitting 30 min fire doors to any room that exits onto the protected exit zone from the loft. In changing this they also removed the requirement to have exit window in the loft at low level.

I dont have exit window in the loft and so have to put fire doors in everywhere, I wanted glazed ones for downstairs but looking at £600-£700 !!

  4. Stuart,
You've got the same problem as me, As soon as it's functional I lose motivation. I've still not finished the kitchen from about 8 years ago, but food keeps coming out of it.
It sounds like the regs might have changed. I replaced all the doors before I started on the loft so they didn't have to be proper 1/2hour doors but fitted them all with hidden closers. The actual loft room door is 1/2hr.
I wanted glass in the doors to the landing but realised these would have to spec and expensive. I'm using a sun tunnel instead to get some light on to the landing.
